“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn't really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while.” - Steve Jobs
I don't consider myself creative, but I do love to connect things. Next week we lead worship at Creation Fest, and during my time on stage leading, I also want to highlight the amazing work of Compassion. Sometimes doing this can feel a little awkward within the flow of worship but I'm convinced that Justice and Worship shouldn't be separated.
So I started connecting things, I took some footage of my trip to Mathare from last year, cropped it into small sections and loaded it into Pro Presenter. I decided to use the footage behind the lyrics of the song Tremble by Mosiac MSC. The tracks for Tremble are all in Ableton formatted with midi notes being sent to the Pro Presenter computer to automate the slide changes.
I then assigned different portions of the video to different sections of the song, embedded them on the lyric slides, and edited them using just the formatting tools in PP, some are slowed down, some sped up and a little bit of colour treatment here and there. (*I've tidied the slides and spacing since exporting this video)
I hope the end result is a special moment of worship as we sing the name of Jesus over the poverty of Kenya, but with the hope that change is and can happen. I also pray it inspires people to make a tangible difference, to put feet on their worship and decide to sponsor a child. I hope we, as a result, resource the local church on the ground to take light and hope into the darkness of Mathare.
